Pam and I filmed Tim & Lynn's beautiful wedding last weekend at the Landmarks Art & Garden Center in Tibuon, CA. I was humbled driving around in our Ford Taurus among BMW's, Mercedes', and Lexus's in that upscale community. -At least our car is paid for:) We were stunned by the beauty of the wedding cake. Lynn saw it in a magazine and had to have it! ...shown above are a few frame grabs from HD video.

Alicia & Jim Highlights | Sonoma, CA

I've always felt that the mark of a true professional is how they handle themselves when unexpected challenges arise. I had the wonderful opportunity of filming Alicia and Jim's wedding at the whimsical Cornerstone Gardens in Sonoma, CA. The wedding was coordinated by Debra Hiebert of Tres Fabu Event Planning and Design. The wedding was held on a scorching hot summer day, and Debra went down with heat exhaustion- but she refused to let her condition affect the event. Debra took a short break to recover and -with her assistant- finished her coordinating duties without skipping a beat. The wedding was a huge success! You will not see Debra in this film, but her creative passion and attention to detail can be found in nearly every scene.

As you may know, I'm a big fan of talented wedding planners. They make a huge difference in helping us get the footage we need to produce timeless wedding cinematography. Good event planning and design allows us to anticipate and prepare for great shooting opportunities rather than merely reacting to them.

Many of the top Caterers, Photographers, Florists, DJ's, and yes- even Videographers were on hand for the Sacramento NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) Awards Gala at the beautiful Arden Hills Country Club & Spa. The theme was 'An Evening in Paris.' My challenge was to film the event with absolutely no external lighting. At a 50th wedding anniversary party this weekend, we introduced the new addition to Jensen Films - Photo Booths! Our new premium booth is designed with the high quality and craftsmanship our clients expect. The soft, flattering illumination we use to light our booth exceeds everything else we've seen in other booths- and with no irritating flash! Our photo booth also holds up to 6 guests in two rows (most are shallow single row, 2-3 person designs). The booth also features interchangeable backgrounds- we currently have 5 fabulous backgrounds to choose from.

Karie & Roger were married in August of 2004 at the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church (a current photo is shown above). Karie recently sent me this touching letter regarding the value of her wedding video:

"Hi Mike - I hope life is treating you well. I was glad to see you are still doing video's for folks.

Five years ago you filmed my wedding and I have to tell you that I have never once regretted hiring you or purchasing such a lavish package. My husband and I watch our video every year on our anniversary. Still to this day we have so many emotions over viewing it because it is just so special to us. We laugh at the funny comments and images you caught from our friends, we cry when we each hear our vows. The life of our wedding was brought back to life year after year because you captured it perfect for us.

I remember arguing with my husband-to-be about hiring someone to film our wedding and how he said it was way to expensive and that it wasn't necessary. Today he looks at me and said that it was the best "giving in" that he did and is so happy that we have it for a life time.

Four months after our wedding my Grandmother passed away and the video you took is the only live images that I have of her. Because of this video I will never forget her mannerisms, her voice, the way she looked, and how wonderful she was.

It also made my heart melt when my daughter, 3 years old, could see her Great Grandma that she saw in so many pictures. It just made me cry when she looked up at her on the TV and saw her GG for the first time and pointed and said Mommy, that's my GG!

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing such an impressive job. You have touched our lives by offering your talents and I will never regret choosing you and your folks for my video.

With all the work we put in to the creative side of producing our wedding films, it is easy to forget that the most important and compelling footage of the wedding day may not be in the magic we create as film artists in camera or in post production- but in documenting the love, laughter, the emotion of the wedding day. Those expressions may be simple and subtle, such as a warm embrace, a touch of the hand, or a tender kiss- or in this case, unexpected, like this heartfelt exchange of vows shown in the film above. The ceremony was filmed at the Monte Verde Inn, near Foresthill, and was officiated by my friend, Judge Tom Cecil.!)

Our film stock beautifully matched the rustic gold country setting at the historic Forest House Lodge near Auburn, California. We had a great time today at the Arden Hills Bridal Show. We featured our new 2010 wedding demo I spent much of the week finishing. The demo included part of the incredible Same-day-edit (SDE) I filmed last week in Portland (see post below). We also showed several of our newest Virtual Wedding Panoramas on our 24" iMac, including a new pano captured high atop the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sacramento. I also brought in our 24" iMac. Jennifer Guzman, a former bride who's wedding we filmed just over a year ago, also lent her enthusiasm in the booth. We met several terrific couples and renewed friendships with some of the best wedding professionals in our industry- including Jennifer Dunham Starr from The Memory Journalists who kindly took this photo.

Let it Snow! Megan + Joe

I've probably filmed at over 30 LDS Temple weddings over the past 20 years. Videographers & Photographers are not allowed to film LDS Temple ceremonies. So we usually begin our coverage as they exit the temple. About 3 minutes after the photo session began on the temple grounds, it began to snowing- heavilly. Having shot some gorgeous B&G rain footage in the past, I knew this would be a wonderful opportunity to create some magic! I'm just glad my new Canon 7D DSLR camera is water resistant! Joe, and my beautiful niece Megan loved the projection replay at the reception:)

Serrano Country Club Bridal Show

Sacramento LDS Temple Wedding

Shaina & Donnie were married over the weekend at the beautiful Sacramento LDS (Mormon) Temple in Folsom. Until 2006, the closest temple for Sacramento LDS couples to be married was the Oakland Temple. Photo & Video are not allowed in the temple, but we get some gorgeous imagery outside when they finish the ceremony. The reception was later held at the Granite Bay Golf Club. Since only worthy members can enter the LDS temple, a ring ceremony was held before the reception at Granite Bay. We produced a Same-Day edit for the couple- projecting film highlights of the wedding day at the reception. The music provided by the bride was, "The man I love" by Ella Fitzgerald. The September meeting of Sacramento NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) was held at the beautiful Newcastle Wedding Gardens + Red Horse Barn. Some of the areas finest Wedding and Event Professionals attended. Our NACE President, Monty Montgomery was undergoing a major surgery and was unable to attend. We wish him a full and speedy recovery. Newcastle Owner Georgia Barron asked that I film the meeting because of the unique decor featured at the event. The theme?- A Bohemian Garden Party! Enjoy:

A Country Wedding at the Flower Farm Inn

We filmed Nicole & Brady's wedding Saturday October 3, at the Flower Farm Inn in Loomis. The Farm includes several small detached cottages, perfect for Groomsmen/Bridesmaid dressing before the big event. The couple chose a perfect country setting, complete with roaming flock of Silke Chickens. Silke chickens originate from Asia, and are named for their unique, fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk. The children had a ball chasing them around. The chickens even made a guest appearance during the ceremony! Nicole brought in talented photojournalist Felicia Perry from L.A. as well as my good friend Joe Kalimaras from SJ's Disc Jockey.

This was my first shoot at the Citizen, and they've done a fabulous job refurbishing the place! Wedding PHOTOGRAPHY VS. VIDEOGRAPHY

I recently put down my video camera for an SLR....at least for a day:) Last Friday, I had the opportunity to shoot stills at a wedding with my good friend Sam Wood from Sharpe Photographers at the Newcastle Wedding Gardens. I had asked him when we worked together at a wedding months before if I could tag along someday as a second shooter/assistant just for fun- and it really was! Attending a wedding without the usual video production pressures was wonderful. Sam outfitted me with a Nikon DX1 body and the pick of any pro lens in his considerable arsenal and we were off to the races:

Having professionally filmed weddings as a videographer over the last 19 years, I could not help but make some comparative observations between wedding videography and photography:

1. Photographers chase the perfect moment, that fraction of a second of optimum lighting, expression, composition etc. Talented photographers rarely get that perfect shot, but they approach it several times at each wedding. Videographers seek to capture the story and emotion of the day in motion and sound. As Sarah -our beautiful bride- tearfully repeated her vows at the altar, I instinctively reached for a video camera- but Sarah chose not to hire a videographer. I felt sad that that memory of that remarkably powerful scene - perhaps the single most important event in her life - will forever be lost.

2. In-camera editing rocks! (am I young enough to say that?) As a photo rookie, I LOVED the ability to instantly delete my last (usually) lousy photo at the push of a button...and Sam would never see it:) I spend an average of 30 hours editing each wedding video- how cool it is for my photog friends to be able to do much of the image editing on-site!

3. Changing exposure accurately in rapidly changing lighting conditions is much easier in video. Since you are looking at the constant LCD readout on a video camera, dialing in the proper exposure real-time is a snap. I fequently found myself chimping (looking at the Nikon's LCD) after each still shot. However, I was more relaxed not having to be constantly worried about making sure the camera was properly framed, focused and exposed or correct audio was being captured as I had become accustomed to in shooting video.

4. Professional Wedding Videography & Photography are complimentary artforms. Brides sometimes ask me if they need a Photographer if they can make stills from video. Not only do stills from a professional photographer render much higher resolution than video stills, but a good photog typically has advanced lighting and compositional skills vital for posed shots such as formals or an engagement session . Thanks Sam!

On June 23rd, Sacramento NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) sponsored the First Annual Tabletop Design Contest, featuring 11 fabulous table settings showcasing the creative talents of top wedding professionals in the area. The event was held at Wilson Vineyards and was graciously hosted by owner Sandra Wilson. Our delicious dinner was prepared by Gretchen Wacholder and her staff from Il Fornaio. Pamela Pamperin - Harpist Extrordinaire

Last night at a SwopMeets mixer of Sacramento wedding professionals, talented Harpist Pamela Pamperin suggested a cool outdoor video shoot featuring her beautiful music. I think she wanted to play Led Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven." That conversation inspired me to create this image- Pam atop the Lost Arrow outcropping in Yosemite...:) ...But how to get Pam and the harp on the rock? Would they stay in one piece- lowered from a helicopter? And would she feel like playing once precariously perched?! Thanks to Guillaume Dargaud who shot the original image- less Pam.

Sarah & David were married on October 25, 2008 at St. Joseph's- a charming Catholic Church on the Sacramento River near Clarksburg. Their fabulous reception was held at the LeRIVAGE Hotel, about 5 miles upriver. Having filmed at St. Joseph's many times over the years, it was great to see Father Dan Madigan again. First-rate wedding professionals working at this wedding included my friends Beth Baugher from True Love Photo and Shannon Cosgrove-Rivas from Flourish (Wedding Flowers).

Jennifer + Nathan | Super 8mm Film

Jennifer & Nathan were married last Fall at the beautiful Monte Verde Inn near Foresthill, CA. I wanted to test a new 8mm film camera and Jennifer was more than happy to volunteer. Film does not have the stunning clarity of HD, but renders a warm, organic, timeless look. I shot one roll along with our normal HD video during the wedding day. This roll showed more film damage than normal, but I like the effect:)

Wedding Blooper {or an 'Act of the Divine'}

Rajinder and Justin held their fabulous wedding Saturday at The Pavilion at The Vintage Estate in Yountville (Napa Valley). I was fortunate to capture this very fun mishap of a tray of wine glasses falling to the ground after being offered to the B&G immediately after the ceremony. The officiant- Dr. Judith Caldwell of Brilliant Ceremonies, did a wonderful job of putting the incident into perspective. The video clip below is yet another reason to consider hiring a Professional Videographer:)

Jennifer + Casey Redux { July 4, 2008}

I just finished this panorama. It was shot on July 4th of last year at the fabulous LeRivage Hotel. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a perfectionist with these- the pano took 8 hours to finish and it still has a few flaws:) The firework display planned on the Sacramento River that evening was cancelled. This was a big dissapointment to Jennifer & Casey. So I photoshopped some lovely fireworks into the scene that I had photographed a few years earlier at a Woodland fireworks display done by my brother Steve.

Michael + Melissa {at Wine & Roses}

This was a true storybook wedding. Michael & Melissa were boyfriend and girlfriend in elementary school and years later reunited. The wedding was filmed at the beautiful Wine and Roses in Lodi, California. We filmed the event with talented photographer Jennifer Dunham Starr from The Memory Journalists.

A new camera called the sprintcam v3 HD was introduced at NAB recently. The camera shoots at 1000 frames per SECOND. I never knew a cube of jello could look so incredibly interesting. I look forward to someday using a high speed camera for our wedding work.

Arden Hills Resort Club & Spa is one of my favorite wedding venues. The antique Ford car the couple used to leave in really added a fabulous accent to the event. Laurel and Alan were married at Arden Hills Resort Club & Spa in Sacramento in August of 2008. Alan was a trainer for Laurel's championship collegiate water polo team. He was obviously a huge fan:)

We always mic the groom and the officiant with super-small wireless lapel microphones about 15 minutes prior to the wedding ceremony. On a whim, I gave Laurel my headset in the brides room minutes before the ceremony so she could eavesdrop on what Alan and the other groomsmen had to say. Alan was sequestered in the Arden Hills' bar a few hundred yards away:

"Thank-You" DVD's: Innovation or Imitation?

For nearly a decade, Jensen Films has offered a very unique product to our brides in addition to our regular wedding videography services: "Thank-you" DVD's. We initially offered them as playable CD's before DVD's became available. We make these DVD's in quantities of 100. They are a short but spectacular highlights reel we create for our brides soon after the wedding to mail to her guests with the Thank-You cards weeks after the wedding.

I recently noticed that "Thank-You" DVD's are now being offered by at least 3 of our Sacramento wedding video competitors...usually in quantities of 100. It's not the first time we've been imitated, or the last- but as usual, I'm flattered! So I have now changed the number of Thank-you DVD's we deliver to 101, just to be different:).

So it's "Thank-You" DVD's for everyone! Sacramento has now become the "Thank-You" DVD capitol of the world! I'm all for it- allowing as many people as possible see the value and power of wedding videography. ...and after all, it's the creative artistry within the DVD's that counts:)

Top25+ Professional Wedding Videographers Cabo Cruise

On February 2nd, several Professional Wedding Videographers and their families set sail on the Carnival Elation for a 5 day cruise down the coast of Mexico. Organizer John Goolsby invited videographers that have been voted to the EventDV Magazines list of the World's 'Top25' Hottest videographers. We all had a great time and had the opportunity to discuss at length the needs and direction of our industry. From Right-Left are Chip Goolsby, Ron Dawson, John Goolsby, Tim Sudall, David Robin, Mike Jensen, and Steve Fowler.

HV20 "BranchCam"

Our brides occasionally ask us how we are able to capture the events of the wedding day so inobrusively- yet are able to deliver such incredibly creative work? One reason is camera placement. Our tiny Canon HV20 camera may be diminutive, but it renders an incredibly sharp High Definintion (HD) image for it's size. And because it is so small, we can hide it almost anywhere. You can see a brief shot from the HV20 in the Monte Verde Demo below (the bride walking under the "BranchCam" during the processional).

Two years ago, we gathered in front of a beautiful neigborhood Christmas display for our 2006 panorama. The 2007 Christmas panorama was captured our family at the end of a dock at Donner Lake. The soloist/DJ was the incredibly talented Travis Seeger from the Entertainment Team (one of my favorite DJ companies). We've videotaped dozens of Catholic weddings over the last 17 years- from the historic Missions along the California coast, to stunning San Francisco Cathedrals, to humble rural Northern California parishes. Few weddings have touched me so deeply than at the wedding of Alicia and Nathan at St. Mary's Catholic church, on 58th street in Sacramento in October of 2007. As part of the ceremony, the couple chose to tenderly wash the feet of their parents, and then in turn each other in a public display of love, humility and thankfullness.

On September 11, 1998 I videotaped Lori and Travis' wedding Love Story at the LDS Oakland California Temple. It was the first of many temple shoots I have done. 'Back in the day' we were shooting in the S-VHS format. I have been extremely blessed to film outstanding brides like Lori over the last 17 years. Lori recently sent me a very kind email, and speaks of the same-day-edit we produced on her wedding day and projected to guests at her reception:

I treasure my wedding video above everything else that was purchased for my wedding. When we were on our honeymoon I was on such a romantic high from the memory of watching it at the reception. I kept replaying it in my head and can’t even explain in words how beautiful the feeling was. I had countless people talking to me about the video and how it moved them to tears. It was a dream come true for me to see what I was feeling inside captured to perfection on film. You are brilliant and I am still amazed you were able to put the temple segment all together for my reception the same day you had filmed it.

It really baffles me to see some brides cheap out on their video or eliminate it all together from the budget because I think many will regret that decision. I will often tell brides who are undecided or leaning toward using “a friend” to videotape that my video is priceless to me. It is watched again and again by family and friends. We watch it every year on our anniversary and my kids beg me to view it. It is our love story, our own movie, and we are the stars.

Lori & Travis now have 4 beautiful children - a growing family, and by all accounts a wedding video they will treasure forever. We will be transferring her old S-VHS tapes to DVD.

One of the truly beautiful wedding locations in Sacramento is the Tsakaopoulos Library Galleria. The vaulted ceilings and stylish marble floor create an incredible ambiance for any ceremony or reception. Last year we filmed Jennifer & Michael's wedding at the Galleria. Thanks to Doug LaVine of Music on the Move DJs/MCs - who pre-recorded and edited Jennifer's thoughts into the daddy-daughter dance. Not an easy task. But I know that Jennifer would tell you that most of the credit for this unforgettable moment goes to her wonderful, supportive father. I found it diffucult to focus the lens of my video camera as the dance progressed, because I was tearing up right along with them:

'White Bird Ceremonial Dove Releases' Demo

I've always suggested to my brides that dollar-for-dollar, one of the best wedding values is a dove release. When you consider the thousands of dollars spent on wedding catering, videography, photography, and flowers- a few hundred dollars for a stunning dove release is a small investment. Not only is it a celebration of your committment in marriage, but eyecandy for your videographer and photographer. Dove releases add a stunning visual element to our work.

My dear friend Anna Hernandez has run White Bird Ceremonial Dove Releases as long as I can remember. She is a true professional, and really loves and cares for her birds as she would her own children!

Newcastle Wedding Gardens Demo

One of my favorite venues to shoot at is the Newcastle Wedding Gardens. The grounds are immaculate, and owner Georgia Barron has done a great job in making the gardens a showcase for brides. Recently, the Red Horse Barn was finished at the back of the property, adding a classy reception venue as well.

This morning I finished a 4 minute DVD demo Georgia asked me to produce for the Gardens. The song- "I wanna get married," by Nellie McKay" was provided by one of our 2007 brides to use in her wedding video. I immediately fell in love with it: Its campy, nostalgic, and speaks to the hopeless romantic in many of us.

I spent much of today eating leftover Valentine's Day cookies and judging the Utah Professional Videographer's Association Creative Excellence awards. The UPVA has one of Americas most successful videographer's associations. It was an honor to judge some of the phenomenal wedding videography produced in that area. Judging the online entries was an educational experience. It brought back fond memories of judging the national WEVA CEA's in Florida in 2004.

We love our wedding DVD!!!! We love how you kept the video moving with energy and how you combined the footage with the music we provided. We love the creative flair you added to the scenes such as starbursts on my bouquet and how scenes with the antique limosine had an old film-reel look just like in 30's movie pictures. The sequence of our first dance routine was amazing and the footage you took was priceless...

My mother and father watched their copy before we did, in fact my mother has already watched it more times than I have... (she) keeps telling me how much she loves the video you created.

San Francisco aerial video shoot!

Had a long helicopter video shoot of several construction sites on Thursday. If I look pale, it's it's because I am - after 3 turbulent hours in the air in a bird the size of a volkswagen beetle:o I also shot some spectacular High Definition (HD) footage of San Francisco wedding and reception locations from the air- Grace Cathedral, the Legion of Honor, the Westin-St. Francis Hotel as well as the Golden Gate Bridge! This photo taken with a Sigma 8mm fisheye lens as part of a 360 degree panoramic image. More pics to come...

2007 was a wonderful year for our family. This panoramic image was taken after a day of family sledding at Cisco Grove. Freezing wind gusts on the dock made the photo a real challenge (elevation 5936 ft). The red cabin across the road was built by my Grandfather- Nick DeLucia. It was here as a boy that I learned how to fish, water ski and enjoy new fallen snow. Unfortunately, the Donner Lake area has become overdeveloped in the 30+ years since the cabin was sold. Paradise lost. But the cherished memories of my youth at Donner Lake will always remain.

"Buttercup"

Several months ago, our Bride and Groom Kendra and Kevin asked us to produce a wedding music video to the song "Buttercup." This song has made a resurgence in recent years. My brother Steve shot most of the choreographed clips on the fly before the ceremony at the beautiful Ridge Golf Club. We were joined at this very fun Disney-esque wedding by our good friends Randy & Michelle Santee of Santee's Designer Portrait Images and Doug Harmon of Music on the Move DJ's/MC's.

WOW!! We are speechless. We can't even begin to express our gratitude for such a beautiful wedding video. You exceeeded our expectations & we can't thank you enough. We are so proud to share our video with everyone and have watched it time & time again ourselves. You managed to capture every single moment...sometimes without us even knowing. BouquetCam V2.1

...just when you thought it was safe to throw your bridal bouquet!

Kimberly and Isaac were married on September 23, at the Grand Island Mansion in the Sacramento Delta. The couple was the first to use the huge new tent which was specially built for wedding receptions behind the Mansion. What at beautiful wedding it was!

Kim's accidentally threw her bouquet into the chandelier- only to be retrieved by her wedding photographer (Sam Wood of Sharpe Photographers) and Isaac her groom. Isaac used a plastic sword given to him by his father-in-law during the toast moments before (that's another story:) Our super-tiny Micro camera (BouquetCam) was hidden in the bouquet. The force of the landing in the lights popped the camera out of the flowers- with the lens just happening to be pointing downwards to get the incredulous reaction of the bride and guests below. What are the chances of that happening? Watch the video HERE. Kim almost threw the bouquet into the lights again during a second attempt...

A close call in San Francisco.

We recently captured perhaps the most spectacular Panoramic Wedding Movie to date at a reception at the Old Federal Building in San Francisco. The young lady who caught the bouquet was so intent on catching it she ran straight into my pano shooter Julie and nearly knocked the camera and tripod down! This planet creation stuff is getting addictive! I couldn't resist putting up another one. This planet panorama of Laura and Eric's wedding December 30, 2006 came out great. Click on the photo to view larger size. The building behind the couple is the California State Capitol. Joining me on the shoot is Sam Wood from Sharp Photographers.

Above is an interesting variation of a wedding panorama- a 'planet' or polar panorama. CLICK ON THE PLANET to view a larger version. This planet panorama was created from 6 stitched fisheye images from the beautiful wedding of Kulaya and Nine at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, August 18. Our hot steadicam operator is Scott Rodier. Images shot by our wonderful camera assistant Julie Arden. Still Photographer was Sara from Kuperberg Photography.
